All band students must enter Newman through the main office door. This door will not be open for students until 7:30 a.m. when office staff arrive. Lessons Ending at 8:05 Students who have 7:55-8:05 lessons will need to bring a book or other silent activity. They will wait in the room quietly while the next lesson begins and can go to class at the 8:30 bell. Lessons Ending at 8:40 Students who have 8:10-8:40 lessons are expected to be in their classroom within 10 minutes, or by 9:00 at the latest. Full Band Ending at 8:30 When band is dismissed, students are expected to carefully put away their belongings, then help put away one chair or stand. Students are expected to be in their classroom before the 8:45 bell. |
Care and CleaningFlutes
Students should brush their teeth (or at the least, rinse their mouth) and wash their hands before any playing. Clean your flute after after each time you play. Pull a corner of your cloth through the end of the cleaning rod and swab out each joint with a gentle twisting motion. Carefully wipe the lip plate with a damp cloth at least twice a month, more frequently if students practice often. Clarinets Students should brush their teeth (or at the least, rinse their mouth) and wash their hands before any playing. Swab your clarinet after after each time you play. Take off your reed and wipe out your mouthpiece with the corner of the swab. Drop the weighted end of the swab through the top. Gently pull the swab through the clarinet 2 or 3 times and put all pieces away. Clarinet mouthpieces should be washed in warm water with a *tiny* amount of dish soap at least twice a month (carefully avoiding getting the cork wet!!), more frequently if students practice often. Saxophones Students should brush their teeth (or at the least, rinse their mouth) and wash their hands before any playing. Swab your saxophone after after each time you play. Take off your reed and wipe out your mouthpiece & neck with the corner of the swab. Drop the weighted end of the swab through the top and turn the saxophone over to retrieve the weighted end. Gently pull the swab through the saxophone 2 or 3 times and put all pieces away. Saxophone mouthpieces should be washed in warm water with a *tiny* amount of dish soap at least twice a month, more frequently if students practice often. Brass Instruments: Trumpet,Trombone, Euphonium Students should brush their teeth (or at the least, rinse their mouth) and wash their hands before any playing. Brass mouthpieces should be washed in warm water with dish soap at least twice a month, more frequently if students practice often. Students should have a mouthpiece cleaner for their instrument and use this to scrub the inside. Polishing cloths can be used to wipe fingerprints. Any cleaning of the instrument itself should be done by the rental company, or a professional if the instrument is owned. Beginning Percussion Students should wash their hands before any playing. Sometimes the mallet head will fall off on the new mallets provided with bell kits; a small dot of wood or craft glue on the tip of the shaft should prevent this from continuing. It is a good idea to use a Sharpie to write the student's name on the end of the shaft of the mallets and drumsticks. For the bell/pad stand, take care not to loosen a nut too far to come off, and make sure to tighten only enough to keep it from moving. |
