Advanced Band
About Advanced Band |
Students who have completed the full year of Beginning Band as a fourth grader AUTOMATICALLY become the Newman Advanced Band. In addition, students who have taken a year or more of private instruction on a band instrument and play for Mrs. Penn may be invited to join this group. Weekly rehearsals will focus on developing further skill as well as preparing repertoire for two concert performances. Students are encouraged to study with a private instructor on their particular instrument.

Student Band Mentoring Many second-year band students have expressed interest in taking on mentor roles with this year's beginners. Early in the year I discuss with students how they will need to be model band students and be willing to help where needed. Sometimes, students feel a little awkward at first, but most become more comfortable "jumping in" even in just the first lesson as a mentor.
If this is something that YOUR CHILD wants to do, we will have a discussion later in the fall about exactly how this program will work this year. Please encourage your child to be open about this opportunity! |
Google ClassroomAll students will soon receive an invitation to the Advanced Band Google Classroom via their Needham Google account. Students can access their Google Suite here: http://start.needham.k12.ma.us/
Home Practice RoutineSpecific weekly feedback & assignments will be available ONLY through our Google Classroom!
1. Warmup: Scale and arpeggio; write out solfege and sing/play the exercise we've been working on. 2. Bookwork: Continue in book to practice reading for our sheet music. (Contact Mrs. Penn if you finish the book and need something more!) 3. Google Classroom: Check for assignments, extra help, and important information! 4. Professional Recordings: These are posted below for the music in our folders. 5. Sheet Music: Work on what has been selected for our next performance. 6. Your Choice: Always end your practice time with something you love! Professional RecordingsListed below are links to professional recordings of all (or part) of each piece in our folders:
(TBA at a later date) How to use recordings: 1. Listen to them to get the idea. 2. Listen while following along in your music with no instrument; really concentrate on hearing your part! 3. (Without the recording) Work on the parts that need it. 4. Check back with the recordings to make sure you are playing accurately. Later, you could play along when you are ready! |
